Overview

Exchange-traded Australian Government Bonds (eAGBs) offer a way to invest in Australian Government Bonds through the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).

There are two types of eAGBs available:

  1. Exchange-traded Treasury Bonds (eTBs)
  2. Exchange-traded Treasury Indexed Bonds (eTIBs)

Investing in eAGBs is similar to buying shares on the ASX. You can only purchase or sell eAGBs through a licensed broker.

What is the minimum amount I can invest?

The minimum investment is one eTB unit or one eTIB unit. Each unit has a face value of $100, but it may be traded for more or less than this amount.

Steps to invest in eAGBs

  1. Consult a financial adviser: Obtain independent financial advice to determine if eAGBs align with your investment goals.
  2. Engage a licensed broker: You can only purchase or sell eAGBs through a licensed broker. See the ASX’s list of Full Service and Online Brokers to find a broker that suits your needs.
  3. Set up a CHESS account: The Clearing House Electronic Subregister System (CHESS) is the system used by the ASX to trade and manage ownership of shares and other securities. If you don't have a CHESS account, your licensed broker can set up a broker-sponsored CHESS account for you.
  4. Review investor information statements: Read the relevant Investor Information Statement, Information Memorandum and Term Sheet for the specific eAGB series you're considering. These must be provided to you by your broker but can also be downloaded below:
    1. Investor Information Statement for exchange-traded Treasury Bonds (eTBs)
    2. Information Memorandum for Treasury Bonds
    3. Investor Information Statement for exchange-traded Treasury Indexed Bonds (eTIBs)
    4. Information Memorandum for Treasury Indexed Bonds
    5. Term Sheets
  5. Place your order: Instruct your broker to buy or sell eAGBs on your behalf.

Important: Financial advisers recommending eAGBs to retail clients must provide the relevant Investor Information Statement, Information Memorandum and Term Sheets.
