How to invest

You can buy or sell Exchange-traded Australian Government Bonds (eAGBs) on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) in the same way you buy or sell ASX listed shares. eAGB trades are cleared by ASX Clear and settled through CHESS.

There are two types of eAGBs available:

  1. Exchange-traded Treasury Bonds (eTBs); and
  2. Exchange-traded Treasury Indexed Bonds (eTIBs).

You should obtain independent financial advice and read the relevant Investor Information Statement and Term Sheets before buying eAGBs.

  • Financial Advisers: If you are a financial adviser recommending to a retail client that they invest in an Exchange-traded Australian Government Bond you must provide the investor with a copy of the relevant Investor Information Statement and Term Sheets.

You are required to advise your clients that from 1 January 2025 communications in relation to Exchange-Traded Australian Government Bonds (eAGB) will generally be provided in digital format. Documents, notices and other communications relating to their eAGB investments will be available through the Investor Centre provided by the Registrar, Computershare. Investors will be notified by email when new information is released.

  • Wholesale Investors: Institutional investors wanting to trade Australian Government Securities in the ‘over-the-counter’ (OTC) market should refer to the AOFM website.

How can I buy and sell eAGBs?

eAGBs can only be bought through licensed ASX brokers. Therefore, you need to have a broker sponsored CHESS account to buy and sell eAGBs.

If you do not have a CHESS account, you should contact a licensed ASX broker to setup an account. The ASX publishes a broker contact list for holders of eAGBs at the following link:

If you already have a CHESS account, you should contact your broker for information on how to buy (or sell) Exchange-traded Australian Government Bonds.

Please note that brokerage charges may be incurred. For more information, please see the Exchange-traded Australian Government Bonds section of the ASX website.

What is the minimum amount I can invest?

The minimum investment holding of any eTB or eTIB is one unit which is equivalent to $100 Face Value of the Treasury Bond or Treasury Indexed Bond over which the eTB or eTIB has been issued.
